The first blog that I posted on The Library Edit was back in January 2018 and it was titled ‘I am not a Teacher-Librarian...Yet’. Happily, I can now say that I AM a Teacher-Librarian and I’m two weeks in with a smile on my face and my head spinning with new challenges!
There is so much that I want to explore further and expand in my school library learning commons that it is somewhat overwhelming so I am grateful for the opportunity that LIBE477 presents to really dig in and focus on a particular area. I am currently finding it hard to decide which aspect of our virtual library learning commons to focus on in making the services of the library and its’ resources available beyond the four walls of the physical space. The current virtual presence of our library needs some attention.
This is what you see when you click on the ‘Library’ tab of our school website.

I want students and families to see the services of the library being relevant to their lives beyond formal schooling. Our district is promoting the use of Office365 and tools like OneNote to share and communicate with teachers and students. I feel as though this could have huge potential for sharing resources and learning within our school community.
I am also interested in increasing school-wide reading engagement using digital tools! Including but not limited to booktalks, reviews, videos, blog posts, student/teacher collaborations, promoting ebooks, audiobooks and using social media),
I was inspired by this awesome product on TpT by an American Teacher-Librarian, it is a Google Slides document that provides students with book recommendations from teachers and other school staff. I would love to use video publishing to engage students in sharing book recommendations and asking questions.
Here are some keywords that I have thought about for my research inquiry:
- Virtual learning commons
- Digital play
- Digital storytelling
- Reading engagement and digital tools
- Video publishing
- Inquiry based learning
- Social media in the School Library Learning Commons
I recognize that my interests are still far too broad so I welcome any feedback on what you think I should focus on this term.
Jordan Shapiro ‘The New Childhood - Raising Kids to Thrive in a Connected World’ and I am excited to read about his positive perspective on how we guide our students to become confident and ethical online citizens. Yet another area of interest!
***Sidenote*** I just picked up this book from the library:

A good brainstorming blog to get the gears moving and help you narrow your focus a bit. So happy to read about your growth and experiences throughout the diploma and very happy to hear about your new role. You do have a lot to digest and build and to focus this year on one or two big goals would make the most sense. As to your keywords, they are heading in different directions, one is focused on building up your Library Learning Commons infrastructure and digital presence. The other focuses on collaborations and new learning opportunities for students. So, for this assignment, in this class, I would pick just one of these directions for now, but both are super important for a successful library program.
ReplyDeleteThanks Aaron - I think I will focus on the digital infrastructure of our school library learning commons. I am hoping it is something I can get students and teachers involved with.
